This will probably  be of more interest to my musicians friends, but I thought it was interesting and would like to hear some other perspectives on this.

I have personally experienced this and would like to get some perspectives on what really is essentially a "pay to play" attitude with a lot of venues.  It really comes down to  "the band that can sell the most beer gets the gig".

Well, we had a "Great" time at the Zion Coffee house last night. The folks there were awesome and seemed to really connect with all the songs we did. It was so refreshing, after playing at some places where you just feel like background music, to be in a concert setting again! Thanks to Marjie and David and everyone who worked the event. We hope to see you all again real soon!
